 Choosing Your Fire: Warming Up and Walking Strong

       

The night of Peter's denial of Jesus remains etched in memory, a night shrouded in bone-chilling coldness (John 18:18). In an attempt to find respite, many gathered around a fire of coals to warm themselves. Among them was Peter, seeking refuge in the comforting glow. However, as he sought warmth, he was twice confronted about his association with Jesus. Simultaneously, in another corner of the hall, Jesus faced interrogation, and a soldier struck him with a contemptuous blow for his words to the High Priest. The palpable tension in the air rendered Peter's denial almost inevitable.


Peter's initial denial might be viewed as an instinctive reaction, but repeating it indicated a more contemplative response. In the seasons of life where enduring the chill of adversity proves demanding, where do you seek solace? Ponder whether the company you keep adds to your spiritual radiance or detracts from it. Is your chosen gathering spot a source of strength or a stumbling block on your path of faith? Symbolically, the cold weather represents testing moments. Associating with those who oppose Christ's teachings during such times exposes one to vulnerabilities, inviting attacks and temptations.


Consider the story of Samson, who found warmth in the embrace of unfamiliar women. His final interaction with Delilah led to captivity in the enemy's clutches and an untimely demise.


As a believer, do you gravitate towards those who dim your spiritual light? Is your chosen social circle a hindrance to your spiritual journey? The cold weather embodies trying times, seeking warmth from the adversaries of Christ renders one susceptible to assaults and enticements. Do you yield to the allure of a 'Delilah' when your emotions surge? The warmth gained from such associations proves fleeting. Just as Peter left the scene in shame after the crowing of the rooster, he was swiftly back in the cold. It was the earlier prayers of Jesus that sustained Peter through his ordeal.


In today's interconnected world, with a deluge of information at our disposal, we often find ourselves drawn to diverse content to stave off boredom. Yet, in the pursuit of temporary warmth, we risk succumbing to corrosive influences that erode our faith. Navigating these cold spells demands vigilance, ensuring that we do not inadvertently slip away from the path of faith. Just as Jesus prayed for Peter's strength, so too must we fortify ourselves against the allure of compromise in the face of adversity. Find warmth in God's presence, through fellowship with His word, and within the company of fellow believers. Remember, embracing harmful influences is akin to holding a burning coal – the consequences are inevitable. May the Lord continue to provide guidance on our journey.
